Chiang Mai
Just an hour’s flight away from Bangkok is the Rose of the North. Once named one of the top five destinations in the world by Travel & Leisure Magazine, USA, this Chiang Mai embraces contemporary comforts while still retaining its natural charm and rich history. Among the most popular activities in Chiang Mai would be the elephant show at Maetamann Elephant Camp, browsing through the various silk, handicrafts, and silverware shops at Sankampaeng District, and
indulging in luxurious treatments at the Oasis Spa.
When the sun sets in Chiang Mai, other attractions come alive, such as the renowned Chiang Mai Night Safari where guests can travel in a tram to see an exotic jungle hosting a variety of wildlife. And for those who prefer a different kind of expedition, Chiang Mai’s famous Night Market offers the best bargains in silks, cotton, ceramics, wood, and other handicrafts. These are just some of the rare treasures you’ll find in Chiang Mai – truly the “City of Life and Prosperity!”
Chiang Rai
Farther north, at the very tip of Thailand this the scenic home of the Hilltribes. Only an hour and fifteen minutes from Thailand’s capital, Chiaing Rai boasts of magnificent mountains, important Buddhist shrines, and enchanting historic sites.
Chaing Rai’s Doi Tung is a must-see destination. It is the site of a major environmental and socio-economic development project of Her Royal Highness the Princess Mother. Here you will find the Princess Mother’s elegant Royal Villa and the Mae Fah Luang Garden, nearly 4 hectares of decorative and flowering plants, inspiring statues, and themed pocket gardens.
Another well-known park in Chiang Rai, though with a more mysterious history, is the Golden Triangle Park. It is the meeting point of Thailand, Mynamar, and Laos where opium was grown and processed. Now, after the redevelopment initiated by the Princess Mother, the once denuded hills of the Golden Triangle Park are alive with trees and fresh vegetation. The Golden Triangle Park also houses the Hall of Opium - an entertaining mix of artifacts, sculptures, and photos retelling the discovery of opium, to its uses, it’s impact in the history, and the efforts undertaken to stop its abuse.
To the south, one can also find the Mae Fah Luang Art & Cultural Park. And the gleaming white temple - the Rong Khun Temple made entirely in white and adorned with fragments of glass.
